Robert Cropper was my 3rd great grandfather (and 1st cousin 5 times removed), baptised 12th April 1812 son of Peter & Ann Cropper and gives his birthplace as Banks. Robert married Mary born abt 1813 in Banks. She could be a Wareing, but it's only a guess based on naming paterns so I haven't put that on my tree.

Thanks to the 1851 Census coming online at Ancestry I've got Robert farming in Little Hoole (with Mary) in 1851 , just before the birth of Peter Cropper ( my great great grandfather). In 1861 the family is back in Banks on Ralphs Wifes Lane, in 1871 at Charnleys Lane, Banks, in 1881 Brow Side, Banks, and lastly in 1891 Robert is widowed and living on Chapel Lane, Banks with his daughter Mary Ann Cropper.

Peter Cropper (son of the above, and my great great grandfather) was born 1851/1852 in Little Hoole, Lancashire. He married Mary Taylor (1875 Ormskirk Registration District) the daughter of Thomas & Jane Taylor (nee Bond) of Banks. Peter & Mary first appear as a couple on the 1881 Census on Guinea Hall Lane, Banks and Peter is listed as an ag lab. In 1891 he's a farmer on Charnleys Lane and in 1901 he's farming at Cop Side, Banks. Cop Side and Brow Side are, I believe, the same road. The "Cop" is an earth bank made to stem flooding and reclaim the land for agriculture: I believe the Cop went a fair distance as there are also references to it in Marshside (Cop End). Peter Cropper dies in 1907 and Mary contines as a farmer in her own right.

Peter & Mary's daughter Dinah (my great grandmother) married William Bond in 1911. William was the son of Jonathan & Jane Bond (nee Wareing), born in 1889 in Crossens. I think one of Dinah's brothers (perhaps Richard?) was the first to try his hand at running the family farm but after a short time he found to be useless and the tenancy was passed on to William & Dinah. The farm in question was now Goose Dub farm on Charnleys Lane (Banks), built (abt 1901) within 50 yards of the Cop and directly next to Goose Dub House, or rather where Goose Dub House had been - now it is just another field. I have seen a map from the 1840's on the internet which shows Goose Dub House and also names the Cop as Goose Dub Bank.

William & Dinah farmed Goose Dub until my grandfather, Peter Bond, took over the tenancy and from my grandfather it passed to my uncle Russell Bond, the last of this line of Bonds to farm and now retired due to ill health. My uncle has the tenancy agreements going back a fair way, but I haven't got round to looking at them yet.

I've enclosed a couple of photos, one of William & Dinah Bond (nee Cropper) and family, and the the other of Dinah with her parents on holiday in Douglas, Isle of Man. The names on the Cropper photo where written by one of my great aunts, so Dinah is the one with "mother" written on her. Sorry about the quality, but it is an old photo. Apparently the Isle of Man was a very popular holiday destination with the local people, and I know from the Census a few families moved to North Meols from the Isle of Man. The Bond photo was taken in the front garden of Goosed Dub Farm, probably in the 1930's. My grandfather is the one stood in the centre, and the only one still alive is the little boy far left.

Incidently Banks did swallow part of Crossens at some stage. At one time the border of Banks on the Southport side was the end of Ralphs Wifes Lane, anything past that (Banks Road etc) was in Crossens. Nowadays Crossens doesn't start until the end of Banks Road (By the Plough Inn), although Banks Road is still considered part of the Parish of St Johns Church, Crossens.

Hi steve. I'd love to see the pixture you speak about. My father is Dinah's great-nephew (through the thomas cropper strand) so it would be lovely to see photos of this family.

With best regards,
Jessica Cropper
